The Bird Photographer: Combining an interest in wildlife preservation and photography.

Angela Robertson-Buchanan is the award-winning nature photographer, published children’s author, passionate wildlife advocate and bird rehabilitator behind The Bird Photographer. She is best known for her up-close macro portraits and progression series. They feature birds that have rescue stories or are an ambassador for their species.

Angela combines her interest in wildlife preservation and photography. She works on projects and exhibitions where she can convey a conservation message and support wildlife organisations by donating prints or a percentage of her sales.

Angela’s signature photographic techniques align with her respect for nature and ethics. She doesn’t have a studio and doesn’t like to use flash. Instead, she relies on natural light, meaning she spends many hours in aviaries or in the field to get the perfect shot.

The macro lens she uses creates a stunning final product. However, it requires Angela to position herself very close to the birds and adds to the challenge of getting the focus spot on.

This technique requires a lot of patience, as birds don’t typically like to stay still. But the results – she says – are worth it; this level of intimacy reveals the personality of the bird.

Some of Angela’s notable awards include Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the year, The Australian Photography Awards, and BirdLife Australia. She also holds Master status/accreditation with the Australian Institute of Professional Photography.

Among Angela’s newest creations are these adorable children’s height charts (pictured above). Track your little’s one’s height against Bonny the Rainbow Lorikeet, Sid the Galah or Steve the Magpie. They measure up to 150cm and hang 30cm from the floor. All packaging is sustainable and environmentally friendly. They make for a great way to follow your kids’ progression and are a fantastic Aussie keepsake.

Angela’s published children’s books would be perfect for the kids this Christmas. She writes from a unique perspective as she has either hand raised the birds/animals she features or has supervised another wildlife carer. Her books aim to give an insight into the care and rehabilitation of our native wildlife. In these troubling times, they need all the help they can get. Angela hopes to inspire the next generation of wildlife warriors.

For our final Online Christmas Market this year, Angela is offering 10% off her fine art prints, as well as her height charts and books. Her work would make an excellent gift for those passionate about wildlife conservation. Don’t miss your chance to score a deal!

You can see all of her work on her website, or follow along on Facebook or Instagram.
