Monica Sotomayor is the woman behind Mónica The Label. Having grown up in Canberra, Monica moved to Sydney to study fashion design, where she first began producing for her label. Having moved back to Canberra more recently, she runs the entire business herself – with a little help from her Mum to pack orders. Her range of well made, versatile womenswear comes from a personal struggle.
A LABEL WITH A PURPOSE:
While living in Sydney, doctors diagnosed Monica with an underactive thyroid, known as hypothyroidism. Her diagnosis explained many years of fatigue and weight gain, which had ultimately led Monica to start making her own clothing. Monica remained confident in her body despite her symptoms. She wanted to be able to continue to dress fashionably, but most brands did not cater to her size. Monica’s true purpose was revealed to her when she experienced this gap in the market.
Through Mónica The Label, she wants every woman to feel included and confident by providing them with sexy, stylish clothing – no matter what size they wear.
Alongside this core purpose, Mónica The Label is all about:
Slow and sustainable fashion. Monica aims to design and create pieces with longevity in mind, that customers can wear for years to come, not just for one or two seasons.
Hearing customer’s voices. Monica is determined to listen to customer’s feedback, opinions and frustrations with existing clothing to consistently improve their styles.
