Creative metalwork studio Broadcroft Design are celebrating 10 years in business and reflecting on how far they’ve come.
For the last decade, designers Duncan and Natalia Broadhead have teamed up to create contemporary garden art and landscape features from their workshop nestled in the lush Sunshine Coast hinterland. Their Australian made pieces have become highly sought after by landscape designers and the general public alike, with demand stretching across the country.
Using locally sourced materials wherever possible, the duo design and create sculptural Corten steel pieces designed to weather and age naturally and beautifully. Inspired by the beauty of their natural surroundings, they aim to ensure that they make a minimal footprint on the environment when creating their pieces.
Their surroundings also inspire their designs - “The abundance of bird life around us has played a part in our current direction, as does the flora we come across,” says Natalia.
They are thriving ten years on, but it’s clear they’re no overnight success.
Like so many good things, the evolution of their business has taken time, patience, and determination. “In the early days we hired a truck, drove to Sydney with our baby Jess in tow and no money in the bank, determined to sell something and make it work”, the couple reflect. As the years went on and their business grew, they relied on trial and error, “oh, and that famous thing called guts and sheer belief that it will work!” laughs Duncan.
And that attitude and approach have paid off in more ways than one. Now, a decade on, Duncan and Natalia live for the “pure freedom of waking up every morning and deciding who’s doing what today - we wouldn’t have it any other way”.
They’ve built a business and a life they love, and this is evident in everything they do.
Even recent global events have had some unexpected silver linings for the Broadheads. “More and more people are realising the importance of handmade, of Australian made. We have been almost forced to discover own backyards and are realising the benefits of being outdoors in our own gardens. Time in nature has so many benefits for your mental health, your happiness and wellbeing, and we couldn’t be happier that we’re a part of an industry that is creating smiles”.
